Potsdam day trip from Berlin: train, tours and buying advice

Guided tours usually leave from Berlin's main station, run six to eight hours and include a walk through Sanssouci Palace, often with a stop at the Dutch Quarter. The schedule is tight.

By S-Bahn line S7 or regional express RE1 you're more flexible and cheaper: the ride takes only about 40 minutes, so a spontaneous trip without advance booking works well too.

Sanssouci Palace with its famous terraced vineyards is the heart of the park; a timed ticket with limited visitor numbers is needed for the interior. Right next to it stands the Neues Palais, the largest palace in Sanssouci Park.

Cecilienhof Palace, the venue of the 1945 Potsdam Conference, sits a little further out in the Neuer Garten and is easy to reach by bus. The Dutch Quarter's brick houses are ideal for strolling, coffee and souvenir shopping.

From Berlin you reach Potsdam by S7 or RE1 in about 40 minutes; both routes lie within VBB fare zone ABC, so a single ABC ticket or an ABC day ticket covers the round trip.

Start early: from late morning both Sanssouci and the Dutch Quarter fill up. Realistically Sanssouci, the Neues Palais and Cecilienhof in one day need six to seven hours including walking through the sprawling park.
